random acts of kindness

Lindsay has done a poem celebrating an act of kindness between strangers. It has reminded me of a little thing that happened to me that has had a long-lasting effect.

It was nearly ten years ago, and I needed an adjustment made to my watch strap. I went to one of the jewellers in the local mall and the job was done on the spot after a small wait. I didn’t expect to pay much, but I thought it would be something. They said, ‘no, no charge, we do these little jobs as a ‘random act of kindness -‘. In a shop? very unexpected, even memorable.

Anyway, and I don’t remember where, I heard the term again ‘random acts of kindness’; and being a curious person by nature I went looking to see where this phrase had originated. I found that it comes from a book called “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff”, and a good read it was too.

Over the years, I have used this phrase many times on different occasions; passing it on, I like to think. And I get a great reaction from people - much as I did when the jewellers passed it on to me.

The book lists examples:
Take somebody else’s turn at a chore if they are busy.
Open a door for a stranger.
Bring in a neighbours rubbish bin.

Brighten your day... find a random act of kindness to do...

Gidday Della,

Thanks for your comment on my post. When I took the photos I was real close, perhaps only 2 feet away, that's why in some of the photos the owl is acting defensive with wings spread and beak open, altho' mind you I was careful that I didn't want to frighten this young baby.

Hi Della ~~ Thanks for comments, glad you enjoyed the jokes (even the ones
that wern't meant o be jokes) I did not want to post a title of "Funeral"
I should have typed "Story" instead.
I really like the "Random Acts of Kindness" and it is great when we meet up with one. The flower photos are
nice also. Take care,Merle.

Yes, it's good to keep the concept of random acts of kindness in mind.

Glad you've fixed up the template business, it's looking very nice now.

Yes, it's a great thought concept. My youngest daughter by co incidence has just decided to do one random act of kindness very week. So far she’s enjoyed the challenge to be creative and make these random acts as meaningful as possible and is keeping a log of them.

It’s something she hopes to continue on.

Best wishes

Rachael, I went to the link, it IS a fascinating story...

Wazza, we had a baby kookaburra lost in our backyard last year, we didn't want to touch it at first in case we scared off it's mother, but the wildlife people told us that it was a myth that human contact frightened bird mothers away from their babes. Pity - we never thought to get photos.

Jacqui, I get the feeling Peter knows all about those random acts...

Merle, sorry to have had a laugh at your titles, actually, no, I am not... it was a 'good' laugh...

Val, I thought I had the template thing licked, then I looked in Firefox :-(
all better now though...

Lindsay - you should show your daughter the link Rachael left us -people all around the world joining this 'cult' committed to doing RA of K...
